Chances are you've just arrived from Bangkok or some other NYC clone. In which case Chiang Mai will most certainly give you a culture shock. If you've come on business and have huge plans buzzing around your bonnet, you'll be forgiven for folding like a busted balloon at the laid back lackadaisical little town that greets you. You see more history than economy and are probably appalled by the chaotic traffic and the haphazard infrastructure. [more]

But keep your spirits up; things are not what they seem. Or as Confucius might have said if he saw your wobbling chin; look beyond what you see. Beneath that blasé façade runs a well-oiled economic machinery that churns out tangible results in many high profile businesses. With a sustained growth rate of 8.5% Thailand is poised to join the elite Newly Industrializing Countries. So go ahead, stake your claim, strike that deal, go bonkers; Chiang Mai awaits.

Business Profile

While Thailand has had a string of bad luck in the form of a major economic collapse in 1997, a devastating tsunami in 2004, and a debilitating avian flu in recent times, cities such as Chiang Mai appear unscathed in what can only be termed sheer good fortune. Or is it? You see, the city has had the good sense to not put all her eggs in one basket, but rather distribute and promote various baskets, oops, businesses. Primarily agrarian, they grow everything from onions to orchards, and let's not forget the tonnes and tonnes of rice, all of which generated about 14 million baht in the year 2004.

But it might be something of a misconception to imagine they are all farmers carrying big baskets of produce on their backs. The movers and shakers in the service sectors, various industries, tourism, and commerce, have steadily generated revenue to the tune of millions of baht in this sleepy little city that still seems to exist in the pages of a medieval history book.

Office, Government times

Government offices work from 8.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. with a 1hour lunch break from 12.30 p.m. to 1.30 p.m. They do not work on week ends and public holidays.
