Chiang Mai Bars
The Tapae Gate area along the Moat is where you'll find a whole lot of good watering holes. The intersection where Chang Rd meets Loi Kroh Rd is another lively spot where you'll find similar action. The Pub on Huay Kaew Rd, The Saloon on Loi Kroh Rd; the Rasta Bar and the Irish Pub on Ratvithi Rd, are all great places to enjoy a drink at decent prices. The Riverside Bar & Restaurant and the Good View Bar & Restaurant are highly popular places and you'll have to get there early to get a table. If your intention is not to get drunk out of your mind, but rather enjoy a good conversation with the liquor relegated to providing some dutch courage, take yourselves off to the Drunken Flower on Huay Kaew Rd.
Chiang Mai Casinos
Here's where it rains on your picnic-there are no casinos in Chiang Mai. But if you absolutely must, there's a way, and it leads across the borders to Myanmar. The Regina Casino Entertainment Resort in Tachelik to be precise. This is when it pours; foreigners are not allowed to stay overnight. So you have to return to Thailand after a day's gaming, and may be go again if you found the experience exhilarating. For the diehard gambler with thrill issues there's the palatial Golden Triangle Paradise Resort, again across the border. You are taken by boat across the international border where you go through immigration, make payments, and are taken to the resort. You are allowed to remain overnight, so gamble the night away, or your money, depending on your luck.
Chiang Mai Clubs
It all depends on what you have in mind. Clubbing in Chiang Mai is a bit different from what you'd normally expect. You do have places like the Tuskers Bar which is a fabulous joint where you can dance to great music. They have great food, a beverages menu that'll have you smiling, plasma TV, wi-fi internet, free pool table, and music that simply won't let you sit down. So if you can't decide between a pub, restaurant, night club, or pool table with a little bit of browsing thrown in, go to Tuskers at Chaiyaphum in the heart of the city.
You should check out Arctica on Huay Kaew Rd for a totally different ambience. A cool metal and glass structure that takes you to a different space and time far removed from the usual tile and teak. The Crystal Cave in the Empress Hotel and the Wall Club at the Chiang Inn Hotel on Chang Klan Rd, and the Bubble Discotheque on Charoen Prathet Rd are other venues where you can rock the night away or at least till 12 a.m. You could also check out the Executive Club at the Mae Ping Hotel on Sridornchai Rd, and the Rinkaew Night Club in the Rinkaew Complex on Wualai Rd.
Chiang Mai Live Music
Catch Took and his band as they take you through old favourites at The Brasserie on Charoenrat Rd. The Riverside restaurant is where the music never ends once it begins at 7 p.m. Expert renditions of Rock, Country and Western, Jazz, and local classical music greatly enhances your dining experience. Almost all restaurants have live bands, so just let the music waft over you while you enjoy the fabulous food. If you were restaurant hopping you might be surprised to find the same band you heard a while ago belting it out at another venue. This is because they move around after about an hour's music at one place.
For uninhibited musical talents of varying levels or to check out the competition, head over to the numerous karaoke bars spread across the city. Mariko Karaoke at the Holiday Inn Green Hills Hotel; the Music Room at the Royal Princess Hotel; Agassi Pub & Karaoke at the Star Inn Hotel; and Napoleon on Ratmanka Rd, are all great places to belt it out to your heart's content.
