Chiang Mai is no ordinary northern city as it once was the capital of the ancient kingdom. Chiang Mai is now the province and Chaing Mai is the key northern city for commerce, culture and education. Chiang Mai University close to the old city is one of the old varsity colleges the that is highly respected through out Thailand. The importance of Chiang Mai for commerce has greatly developed since China opened up its southern boarder with South East Asia. This established commercial hub will see great changes over the years to come.
For people travelling to Chiang Mai you can expect a wide range of attractions showing off some of the traditional arts, crafts and skills of Thailand. Indeed this is where many of these arts were first started. The Thai martial arts and Thai Massage have large followings and learning centers here.
No trip to Chiang Mai would be complete with out a trip to key temples on which many of the main Buddhist values in Thailand were founded.
Doi Suthep National Park is another key place to visit as it brings together and showcases the hill tribe cultures of the surrounding mountains.
